FLORA

Litchfield with Pines

I used Van Gogh’s Wheat Field with Cypresses (1889) as inspiration for this piece. Early on I realized the texture of the oil paints and the many brush strokes that Van Gogh used would be impossible to replicate (especially working with my acrylic paints on watercolor paper), so I ended up improvising a little, but still trying to keep the whimsical nature of his piece throughout.

FLORA

For this prompt, I wanted to capture movement, which inspired me to create a small animation. I sketched a few stages of a flower blooming in my sketchbook and took the images into Photoshop to do the rest. I'm always shocked by how manual animation is!

Movement governs the world of flora and fauna, and is at the heart of all life. Furthermore, as I've been immobile because of my knee, I've been thinking about movement as growth. A flower blooming captured that dynamic, and reminded me that even though things are a little dark right now, life will always find a way.
